Leo (Dale) Mason, the son of Herbert (Hap) and Buelah (Martin) Mason Salmen, was born February 12, 1929, on a farm near Calumet, IA. He received his education at Calumet and Sutherland, Iowa.

He was united in marriage to Patricia Wetherell of Peterson, IA, in April of 1950, at the First Congregational Church in Peterson, IA.

Dale was a school bus driver, drove truck and delivered gas. His wife, Patricia, preceded him in death August of 1963 of cancer.

On June 4, 1966 he was united in marriage to Shirley (Myers) Atkinson at First English Lutheran Church in Spencer.

They made their first home in Sutherland where he worked for the elevator. They then moved to Carroll, IA, where he was a traveling salesman for Felco selling tires, and etc.

They purchased the grocery store in Peterson, IA. When they sold Masons Market they moved to Ogallala, NE and purchased House of Bottles Liquor Store. When they sold this store, they moved to Blair, NE where they ran the Blair Marina.

They moved back to Sutherland where they started a nightclub called the Old P.O. Then Dale became a State Inspector for four years and moved to Hartley, IA.

They then moved to Buffalo, SD, where his mother and step-father lived and leased the city bar there and then he became foreman for Koch Oil Field there for 10 years.

Upon Dale retiring they moved to Dam Road in Arnolds Park, IA where they built a new house. Then they moved to an acreage north of Spencer, then they moved to Spirit Lake where his wife, Shirley, worked at Berkleys. When she retired in 1999, they moved to Sutherland in 2001 to help run Dog Creek RV Park for five years (1999-2003) and they were campground hosts in Yuma, AZ for five winters. In April 2006, they moved back to Sutherland when Dales health started to fail.

Dale was a board member of Congregational Church, Clay County Fair stockholder, 49-year member of Masonic Lodge and member of Abu Bekr Shrine where he and Shirley worked for 10 years for the Shrine Stand at the Clay County Fair. He was also a member of the Antique Car Club.

On July 13, 2007, Dale passed away at the Sutherland Care Center at the age of 78.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Patricia Wetherell in 1963; his parents; his stepfather, W.M. Salmen; son-in-law, Al Dunlop; and brothers-in-law, Dwane Myers, Roy (Andy) Wetherell, and Ray (Slim) Wetherell.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 41 years, Shirley Mason of Sutherland; five children: Barbara Jo (Jack) Bradshaw of Mission, TX, Bonnie (Ron) Mueller of Peterson, IA, Becky Dunlop of Aurora, Co, Jolise (Joie) Mason of Boise, ID, step-son, Kevin (Atkinson) Mason of Aurora, CO; three grandsons: Brian Mueller, Kevin Mueller and David Knight; one granddaughter, Donnette Knight; six great grandchildren; two sisters: Mary (Jim) Brown and Bette Mason; brothers-in-law S.A. (Bud) (Mary) Myers and Rob (Marianne) Wetherell; sisters-in-law: Toppy and Wilda Wetherell; other relatives and many friends.
