Vernon Lee Harmon, the son of Lee and Ida Smith Harmon, was born June 9, 1917 in Rolfe, Iowa. His childhood years were spent in Rolfe, where he received his education, graduating from Rolfe High School. Later, he attended one year of college at Wartburg College in Waverly, IA. Following his schooling, he entered the military and served with the U.S. Army in Washington, DC and Hawaii, until his honorable discharge.

Vern married Alice Barry on December 28, 1941 in Spencer, Iowa. Following their marriage, they continued to live in Spencer, where he owned and operated H & S Roofing and later Harmon Building Service, before selling both businesses and starting Harmon Real Estate, which he operated for several years. He later was elected Clay County Assessor, which he served for 13 years, until his retirement.

Vern was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer. He was also an active ambassador for the Spencer Community and served on several boards for several clubs and organizations as well as being a member of the American Legion, where he was the Commander, the Golden K Kiwanis, the Eagles, Elks and Moose Clubs. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, and golfing.

One of his favorite hobbies was winemaking, which he taught classes on at the local community college, spoke to groups about and started the winemaking competition at the Clay County Fair, which he judged for many years.

Vernon passed away at the Spencer Hospital on Friday, February 2, 2007 at the age of 89. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Alice on October 5, 2004; one brother, Glenn and 3 sisters: Doris, Donna and Pearl.

He is survived by two daughters and their husbands: Bonnie & Robert Peck of White Bear Lake, MN and JoAnne & Gerald Cross of Ardmore, OK; five grandchildren: Ned and Gretchen Peck, Matthew, Brian, and Annie Cross; one sister, Jessalie Froh of Humboldt, IA; a brother-in-law, Floyd Minkler of Plover, IA; many nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
