Vernon Martin Hinkeldey, the son of Albert and Lillie (Grieme) Hinkeldey, was born in Alta, Iowa, on February 20, 1936. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Johns Lutheran Church, Hanover, Iowa. He received his early education at Hanover Parochial School and then graduated from Alta High School in 1954.

On October 6, 1957, Vern married Beverly Bergquist at Trinity Lutheran Church in Alta, Iowa. Following their marriage, Vern served in the United States Army from 1957 to 1959. Vern owned and operated P & H Fixture and Cabinet Company in Spencer from 1960 and was actively involved in the business until his retirement in 2004. He was a charter member of Christ The King Lutheran Church in Spencer where he served as Church Elder, Congregation President, and on the building committee.

Vern loved to design and craft architectural woodwork. He enjoyed the challenge of taking the impossible project and making it work. His home was his workshop and he was always creating and building. Vern also enjoyed doing things together with his grandchildren. From swinging a hammer or helping with a special project to playing games, he loved having the grandkids around.

Vern passed away on November 17, 2006 at St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer at the age of 70. He is preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Lillie, and a niece, Dawn Hinkeldey.

He is survived by his wife, Beverly of Arnolds Park, IA; his three children: Craig and Deb Hinkeldey of Spencer, IA; Christi and Craig Gabhart and their children: Jonathan, Michael of Spencer, and Jennifer and her husband, John Hansel of Pella, IA; Matt and Cammy Hinkeldey and their son, Sam of Richfield, MN; two brothers: Arlin and Marilyn Hinkeldey of Cherokee, IA and Gaylen and Lynda Hinkeldey of Cathedral City, CA; other relatives and friends.
