Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 17, 2006, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Spencer, Iowa.

James (Jim) Leonard Johanson, the son of Nels and Nellie Mathilda (Nilsson) Johanson, was born March 8, 1917 in St. Paul, Nebraska. His childhood years were spent in St. Paul where he received his education. He finished his schooling following his eighth grade year to help out on the family farm. He later served in a CCC Camp for 18 months. He entered the military and served with the U.S. Navy during WW II until the time of his discharge. Following his discharge, he moved to Spencer, Iowa to begin farming.

Jim married Margaret Brinkley on February 23, 1947, in Spencer, Iowa. During their marriage, they farmed southwest of Spencer for many years, moving to town in 1983. Following the death of his wife on October 30, 1999, Jim continued to live at home until moving to Riverview Terrace Assisted Living. After suffering a stroke, Jim moved to Valley View Estate Health Center in Hamilton, Montana, where he had resided at the time of his death. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Spencer. Jim was a member of the Moose Lodge in Spencer. He thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his family, golfing, and visiting about his WW II experiences.

Jim passed away at the Valley View Estate Health Center in Hamilton, Montana, on Friday, May 12, 2006, at the age of 89. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Margaret.

He is survived by one son, Ben and his wife, Vicki Johanson of Parker, CO; one daughter, Jane and her husband, George Sechrist of Hamilton, MT; two grandchildren: Jennifer Gabel of Willmar, MN and Brian Johanson of Denver, CO; 3 great-grandchildren: Taylor, Morgan and Jordan Gabel of Willmar, MN; one sister, Virginia Justesen of Nebraska; other relatives and many friends.
