Bernadine Harves, the daughter of Lester and Emma (Straub) Hanna, was born on June 22, 1917, on a farm near Gillett Grove, Iowa. During her childhood years, she lived on a farm northeast of Spencer and attended classes in the Meadow Township one-room school nearby. Bernadine graduated from Spencer High School in 1935 and soon after completed Buena Vista College teaching courses. She then taught in a one-room school near her family home in Sioux Township.

Bernadine married Ervin Dale Harves on March 18, 1939, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Following their marriage, they made their home on a farm south of Dickens and recently celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary.

She was a member of the Dickens UMW, United Methodist Church, Community Birthday Club, and the Dickens Cemetery Society. Bernadine made beautiful flower arrangements for church functions. She enjoyed baking, reading, flower and vegetable gardening, bird watching, collecting sea shells, and most of all spending time with her family and friends. Bernadine had hip surgery and entered the Ruthven Care Center the summer of 2005.

She passed away on Wednesday, March 29, 2006, in the Spencer Hospital at the age of 88. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Forrest Hanna; one sister, Ruth Myers; and granddaughter, Heidi Harves.

She is survived by her husband, Ervin Dale of Dickens, IA; 2 sons: Dr. Allen Harves and his wife, Geraldine of Dubuque, IA; and Richard Harves and his wife, Ann of Dickens, IA; 4 granddaughters: Heather Harves of Tucson, AZ; Erin Harves of Olathe, KS; Kristi and her husband, Dr. Brian Fisher of Dickens, IA; Stephanie and her husband, Matthew Essick of Ayrshire, IA; 4 great-grandchildren: Nate, Elisa, Brenna and Luke Fisher; and many relatives and friends.
