Funeral Services Held Wednesday for C.S. Billings

A highly esteemed resident of Spencer for many years, Charles S. Billings, 63 years of age, former druggist of this city, died Sunday morning, November 29, 1931, at ten o'clock at the home of his son, Merrill H. Billings, 445 East Seventh street, where he had made his home for several years. Death was caused by heart trouble and a complication of diseases.

Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at two o'clock at the Cobb-Phelps Funeral Home in Spencer with the Reverend B. J. Trickey, pastor of the First Congregational church, officiating. Mrs. Amy Anderson of Milford and Miss Genevieve Henderson of Arnolds Park, sisters of Mrs. Merrill Billings of Spencer, sang "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" and another selection.

Pall bearers were W. H. Annett, Leon Dye, Ben Arthaud, C. A. Reely, A. L, Kohn and Dave Logan. The Masonic Order, Evening Shade chapter, No. 312, was in charge of the last rites at the grave. Spencer Masons and members of the Drum and Bugle Corps, Glen Pedersen Post No. 1, American Legion, attended the services in a body. Burial was made at Riverside cemetery.

Death came to Mr. Billings after an illness of nearly a year, during which time he was confined to a wheelchair. Mrs. Billings, during the long illness of her husband, was a constant attendant, giving loving care and ceaseless devotion to him. The last ten days of his illness he was bedfast, and death came quietly Sunday morning.

Charles S. Billings was born November 9, 1868, at Fayette, Iowa, where he attended school and grew to young manhood. He attended the University of Wisconsin at Madison, Wisconsin, as a student of pharmacy and received his degree in June, 1890.

He was united in marriage August 1, 1895, to Grace Hoyt. To this union three sons were born, Merrill H., Chester and Donald.

In 1900, he came to Spencer, Iowa, where he entered into partnership with George Cottrell. T ogether they operated a drug store.
Later, Mr. Billings bought Mr. Cottrell's interest and was sole owner of the drug store until in 1907, when he sold the business to W. W. Haygarth.

He then moved to Kiron, Iowa, where he operated a drug store and was also postmaster for several years. Six years later he and his family returned to Spencer where he was employed by O. A. Bjornstad Drug company. Several years later he traded his home in Spencer for a farm at Wadena, Minnesota, where he lived for about three
years.

Since his return to Spencer about three years ago, he and his wife have made their home with their son, Merrill.

He leaves to mourn his death his devoted wife, three sons, Merrill H. of Spencer, city mail carrier, Chester, employed by the Bowman Printing company at Spencer, and Donald of St. Paul, Minnesota, three grandchildren, Betty, Bob and Bruce Billings, children of Mr. and Mrs. M. H. Billings of Spencer, and a brother Roy of Texas, beside a number of other relatives and a host of friends.
