Gertrude Whedon Allebaugh, 1846-1924

Gertrude N. Whedon was born at Defiance, Ohio, June 10, 1846, and passed away at Spencer, Iowa, Oct. 3, 1924, at the age of 78 years, 3 months and 23 days, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W.L. Jayne.

When 15 years of age she moved with her parents to Goshen, Ind., where she resided until she was united in marriage to Samuel Allebaugh Oct. 2, 1862.

In the spring of 1871 they moved to Clay county and here they homesteaded in Lincoln township making that their home until moving to Spencer in 1892 where they resided until the death of Mr. Allebaugh on Feb. 17, 1917.

To this union five children were born, Willard L., who died at the age of eight, Carrie M. Ballard of Vancouver, Wash., Newel E. of Kootenai, Idaho, Mabel A. Jayne of Spencer, Ia., and Irvin C. of Garretson, S.D.

Mrs. Allebaugh united with the M.E. church when a young girl and was always active in church and Sunday school work and particularly the choir in which she sang for a great many years. About four years ago she transferred to the Congregational church where she has since retained her membership.

About eight weeks ago she was taken to her bed and was patient and cheerful through all her pain and suffering until the death angel relieved her.

The funeral services were held at the Congregational church Sunday afternoon at 2:30 conducted by Rev. Hurst in the absence of her pastor.

The remains were laid to rest in Riverside cemetery. R.S. Brown, A.C. Perine, Wm. Castendyck, W. Torbert, Homer Pitcher, L.B. Peese acted as pall bearers.
