Taken to Cherokee

Last Friday Alpheus Adams was taken before the commissioners of insanity, adjudged insane, and ordered taken to the hospital at Cherokee for treatment. Mr. Adams was one of the early settlers of the county, having located at Gillett Grove more than thirty years ago. Ever since, coming to this county he has been considered a "peculiar" character, and of late years he has been unusually so. Recently some of his demonstrations have been of such a character that it was thought wise to restrain him, and on Saturday, Sheriff Price, assisted by B. Hitsman, took him to Cherokee for confinement in the state hospital. Although almost 75 years old, Mr. Adams is strong physically and made vigorous resistance to being taken, and it was necessary to strap his arms. He imagined that the officers were attempting to rob him. Mr. Adams is in good shape financially, owning both farm and town property, and over $700 was found sewed in his coat when searched at the hospital. Sheriff Price and Mr. Hitsman, while on their way to Cherokee with him, asked Mr. Admns why his coat bulged so at the point where the money was found, anid his prompt reply was: "Oh, there is hay in there." It is sad to see a man of Mr. Adams's years and condition continued in a hospital, but, in his case it seemed the best solution of the difficulty.
