Death Takes Father of Mrs. Chas. Randt Monday

Phillip Kaus, 86, pioneer of Clay County died Monday morning, December 21 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Chas. Randt. His death was the result of complication of diseases incline to old age. He has been failing for several months and for the past few weeks has suffered a great deal and it was known that he could not [sic]. His passing was a release from [sic] and suffering and his death could [sic] be grieved. A good man has gone home.

Funeral services were conducted on Wednesday afternoon with a short ceremony at the house and the church service in the English Lutheran Church of Spencer, of which he was a charter member. The services were conducted by the Pastor of that Church, Rev. O.C. Geisler. Burial was made in Evergreen Cemetery in Summit Township.

Mr. Kaus was born in Columbus, Wisconsin, December 14, 1850. He first came to Iowa when 17 years of age. Taking up his residence at Hampton. There he was united in marriage to Miss Dorothea Dreyer, 58 years ago.

In 1878, Mr. and Mrs. Kaus came to Clay County, settling on a farm Northwest of Spencer, where they resided many years. Mrs. Kaus died May 17, 1930.

For the past seven years the decreased has made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Randt. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Wisconsin and has been a faithful member of the church.

Mr. Kaus was a quiet, kindly always pleasant old gentleman, He always has a cheerful pleasant greetings when passing your home or meeting you on the street. As a neighbor [sic] have noticed that he seemed to enjoy getting around with his cane, and the feeble, always cheery.

While he will be missed from the home in which he has lived for several years, tender memories of his patience and kindly manner will soften the grief.

Surviving besides Mrs. Randt are son, Henry C. Kaus of near Spencer, and a daughter, Mrs. G, H. Schueneman of Summit Township.
