Mrs. E.A. Howard, one of the early residents in Clay county, died at her home near Gillett Grove Thursday evening, December 26, 1929, after an illness of several years, and had been confined to bed most of the time since early in August of the past year, when she suffered a paralytic stroke, which paralyzed her left side and rendered her practically helpless. At the time of her death, which occurred at eleven o'clock, she was 87 years, 4 months and 11 days of age.
Funeral services were held at the home near Gillett Grove Monday afternoon of this week, with the Rev. A.R. Cuthbert, pastor of the Grace Methodist Episcopal church of Gillett Grove, officiating. Mrs. Chas. D. Barnard of Gillett Grove sang two solos, "Rock of Ages," and "Abide with Me." Interment was made in the Logan township cemetery.
Eliza Ann Lahman, the second of nine children of James and Margaret (Humphrey) Lahman, was born near Mount Vernon, in Knox county, Ohio, August 15, 1842.
On December 31, 1863, she was married to Joseph Edward Beeny at Mount Vernon, Ohio. After a few years of married life she was left a widow, and in 1866 she came with her parents to Cedar county, Iowa.
In 1877 she was married to Henry Howard and they made their home in Wisconsin until Mr. Howard's death. She joined her parents in 1882 and came to Clay county, where they located on a farm in Logan township. After the death of her parents in 1893, Mrs. Howard moved to the home of her brother, Lewis Lahman, in 1894. She remained with her brother for nearly eleven years, and since his death she lived much of the time alone, with the exception of about one and one-half years, which were spent with her daughter in Colorado.
Two children preceded their mother in death, and two other children survive. They are Mrs. Lulu Van Gundy of Grand Junction, Colorado, and James S. Howard of Logan township. She also leaves eleven grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren, one brother, Jonothan Lahman of Mechanicsville, Iowa, one sister, Mrs. D.C. Palmer of Spencer, and a number of nieces and nephews.
