Funeral services were held Friday, November 25, at the Methodist church in Gillett Grove for Samuel Ferguson, 77, retired farmer of Gillett Grove, who died Wednesday, November 23.

The Rev. Arthur Bottom was in charge of the last rites and interment was made in Logan township cemetery.

Samuel Ferguson, the son of James and Elizabeth Ferguson, was born at Thornhill, Perthshire, Scotland, May 21, 1855. At the age of 27 years, he emigrated to the United States and made his first home in Linn county, Iowa, in 1882.

In 1885, he moved to Clay county, Iowa, and established his home on a farm one mile south of Gillett Grove. In 1893, he returned to his home land, Scotland, for a visit and was there united in marriage on March 22, 1893, to Mrs. Annie Campbell at Glasgow. Mr. and Mrs. Ferguson, accompanied by Mrs. Ferguson's son, Thomas, Campbell, returned to the home farm at Gillett Grove and continued living there until 1921 when they established residence in the town of Gillett Grove.

As a boy in Scotland, Mr. Ferguson received religious instruction and joined the Established Presbyterian church there. During his long life, Mr. Ferguson has enjoyed in full measure the well-merited esteem of his friends and neighbors. His memory will be long cherished for his rugged honesty and his deep and sacrificing interest in the community affairs of Gillett Grove.

He is survived by his widow and step-son-and a nephew, James Johnson, of Webb and other relatives.
