Mrs. Victoria Straub, mother of Mrs. Clare Sherbondy, 775 North State street, passed away at the Sherbondy home on Tuesday afternoon at 5:40. About six years ago Mrs. Straub suffered a stroke and the following year a second stroke which left her helpless in bed for five and a half years. She has made her home with her daughter who tenderly cared for her day and night and all was done that loving hands could do.
Victoria Weldenmeyer was born in Baden, Germany, on September 6, 1854, where she grew to womanhood and received her education in the public schools at that place. In 1872 she was united in marriage to Edward Straub, also of that place. In 1882 they came to America and settled on a farm near Early, in Sac county, where they remained for five years. They then moved to Clay county, Iowa, near Gillett Grove, living there until the fall of 1902. Mr. Straub passed away at that time and Mrs. Straub came to Spencer to make her home.
Nine children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Straub, all of whom survive except LeRoy, who died at the age of five years. Those who are left to mourn their loss of a kind mother are: A.W. Straub of Webb, F.A. Straub of Alix, Alberta, Canada, Edward Straub of Orin, Wyoming, Mrs. C. Sherbondy and Mrs. L.A. Hanna of Spencer, Otto Straub of Everly, Mrs. E.F. Straub of Spirit Lake, and Ernest Straub of Spencer. There are also sixteen grandchildren and three sisters, two in Switzerland and one in Colton, Washington.
In early childhood Mrs. Straub was baptized in the Lutheran church and was a true Christian and a most devoted mother. Her children were always first in her thoughts, never thinking of her own comfort but only those of her loved ones. She was loved by all who knew her and was a patient sufferer through all the years of her illness.
Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at two o'clock at the Methodist church with Rev. Collins conducting the services. Burial will be made in the Dickens cemetery beside her husband.
