Mrs. Henry R. Brownell

Mrs. Henry R. Brownell, resident of Clay County and Spencer for nearly sixty years, died at her home, 195 West Third Street, Spencer, Sunday evening, June 23, 1929, at 6:15 o'clock. Her death was caused from dropsey. At the time of her death she was 86 years and 28 days of age.

Mrs. Brownell had been in poor health for several months, having been ill with the flu in the spring and from which she never fully recovered. She had, however, improved in health and had been up and around the house shortly before her death. Her sister, Mrs. Martha J. Gage and daughter, Miss Maud Gage, both of Winona, Minnesota. who arrived, Monday evening after receiving word of her death, had stayed with Mrs. Brownell during the month of May assisting in carrying for her and had returned to their home when Mrs. Brownell improved. Her death came quietly Sunday evening.

Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at 1:30 o;clock in the chapel of the Cobb Funeral Home. Rev. I.D. Archibald, Pastor of the First Baptist Church of Spencer, officiated. Burial was made in Riverside Cemetery at Spencer.

Anna M. Nation, daughter of Joseph and Anna M. Nation, was born May 25, 1843, in Middlesex, England. At the age of seven years, she came to America with her parents and lived in Albany, New York, until she was 13 years old. The family then came west and lived on.

The following year Mr. and Mrs. a homestead which the father took in Fremont, Minnesota. When 20 years of age, she returned to Gloversville, New York and there she was united in marriage to Henry R. Brownell, February 24, 1868.

Brownell removed to Rushford, Minnesota, where they lived for one year and thence to Winona. About fifty-nine years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Brownell came to Spencer, homesteading on a farm nine miles from here. They continued to farm for nearly thirty years, operating two farms of 440 acres.

They experienced the many hardships of the early pioneer days and by hard toil and thrift made a success of their work. They retired from farming about twenty-nine years ago and then moved to Spencer to make their home. Mr. Brownell died in the year 1902 and Mrs. Brownell continued to make her home in Spencer. Despite her age, she remained spry and active in manner and was interested in the affairs of the town and her neighbors and friends.

There were no children born to Mr. and Mrs. Brownell. In addition to the one sister and niece who came to attend the funeral services. Mrs. Brownell is survived by one brother, George W. Nation, St. Louis. A niece and husband, Mr. and Mrs. H.A. Olson of Minneapolis, who came for the funeral, also a number of other nieces and nephews.
