Carl H. Zishka, a resident of Clay county for the past forty years and widely known in this community, died at a hospital in Chicago on Friday, January 21, 1921, following a serious operation for stomach trouble from which he had long been a sufferer.
The remains accompanied by his brother Frank Zishka, were brought here for burial and the funeral was held at the American Lutheran church, on Monday afternoon at one o'clock, Rev. E. Grummer conducting the services. Burial was made in Evergreen cemetery in Summit township.
Carl H. Zishka was born on September 4, 1862, in Germany where he spent his early boyhood days. He came to America with his father, Godfrey Zishka, now deceased, who first located in Illinois. The same year, 1874, however, he came to Iowa settling in Franklin county, where he made his home until 1881, when he removed to Clay county and a few years later purchased a farm in Summit township, where he has since made his home.
He was united in marriage with Miss Minnie Schuneman on October 14, 1887, to Mr. and Mrs. Zishka were born eight children, Mrs. Lubert Meyer, Mrs. Dick Winterboer, Mrs. Harry Bleeker, Mary, Elna, Karl and Reka. Gustav, aged 8 and Otto aged four, died about twenty-four years ago. He also leaves four brothers William, of Windom, Minnesota; Albert, of Lakefield, Minnesota, Frank and Dan, residing west of Fostoria, besides his wife and children to mourn his death. He has been a devoted member of the American church since infancy.
Mr. Zishka was a man of forceful character and had many friends. He served as township trustee of Summit township and was identified with schools for several years in an official capacity. His personality made a strong impression on the community and he won his prosperity through well-directed energy, and was ever ready to give of his time, labor and advise for a worthy cause.
