J.M. Niemand Clay Pioneer, Dies Tuesday

Funeral Services Will Be Held Saturday at 1:30 O'clock

J.M. Niemand, 84, Clay county pioneer and retired farmer, passed away Tuesday evening at 8:30 at his home at 195 Grove street, being suddenly seized with a paralytic stroke, which left him unconscious, death following a short time later. He was in apparent good health, being up and around when the fatal attack occurred.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at the Cobb funeral home with Dr. H.E. Hutchinson, pastor of the Grace M.E. church, conducting the rites. Interment will be in Liberty cemetery south of Greenville.

To America When 17

John Martin Niemand, one of two sons of John and Emma Niemand, was born December 19, 1850, at Hemme, Holstein, Germany, where he was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith which he always exemplified. At the age of 17 he came to America, leaving his parents and a brother, William, in Germany, all having preceded him in death.

Clay Resident 53 Years.

In America he located at Wheatland, Iowa, living there three years. He then moved to Tama county. On December 28, 1878, he was united in marriage to Bertha Carolin Seaman. They farmed near Gladbrook, Iowa, three years, then moved to Clay county on a farm near Cornell in the year 1882, residing there until March 5, 1910, when they moved to their present address on Grove street. To this union were born nine children. Anna died in infancy, and Amelia passed away March 14, 1905.

Those remaining are Charles Niemand of Montevideo, Minn., T.Richard and August Niemand of Spencer, Mrs. Neil Kimball of Los Angeles, Calif., Mrs. Bert (Sophia) Johnson of Fort Dodge, Mrs. Gus (Matilda) Anderson and Edna Niemand of Spencer; six grandchidren, Howard Niemand of Montevideo, Evelyn Niemand Tostenson of Montevideo, Beverly Johnson of Fort Dodge, Alma Anderson, Leah and Imajean Niemand of Spencer; one great grandson, Dale Tostenson of Montevideo, together with his wife, Mrs. Niemand, and a host of other relatives and friends.
