Peterson Patriot--Death claimed Gaylord Johnson, 18-year-old Sheldon youth Tuesday morning, after he had remained unconscious almost 100 hours from the time he was found in the gas filled home of his aunt, Mrs. Earl Maccabee, in Sioux City a week ago last Friday afternoon.
Johnson was found beneath a bed in the same room with the lifeless body of Fred Sage, chum of Johnson, who had been dead from the gas fumes several hours before the home was entered.
Johnson was revived by employees a of the Sioux City Gas and Electric company by means of a oxygen lungmotor, and was rushed to St. Joseph's hospital. At his bedside at the time of his death were his parents, Mr. and Mrs. James O. Johnson of Sheldon.
The Johnsons formerly lived in Royal, this county, where Mr. Johnson was in the implement business. Gaylord was born and raised there. The family left Royal about three years ago.
Johnson and Sage, who had graduated from the Sheldon high school a year ago, arrived in Sioux City Thursday afternoon from Minneapolis, Minnesota, in search of work.
They were given permission to sleep Thursday night in the Maccabee home and are believed to have left open accidentally a burner of a kitchen gas range, which they had used in preparing a lunch before retiring early Friday morning.
In addition to his parents, Gaylord is survived by two sisters, Marian and Opal Jean, and two brothers, Avery and Warner, all of Sheldon, Iowa.
The body was brought from Perasso Brothers undertaking Parlors to Peterson on Wednesday. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church here Thursday.
