Theodore Rhinehold Kosta, the son of John and Elizabeth Huffman Kosta, was born May 5, 1911 in Colome, SD. His childhood years were spent in Hartley, Iowa, where he received his education, graduating from Hartley High School.
Ted married Lucy Batcheler on September 23, 1933 in Spencer, Iowa at the Clay County Fairgrounds. Following their marriage, they owned Kosta Friendly Grocery Store for 7 years and then worked for the California Defense, where he built airplanes for 7 years, until moving back to Peterson, where he began farming. They farmed for 27 years in Peterson and later retired in Everly. They moved to Spencer in 1999, where they resided until the time of his death. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Everly. Ted was also a member of the Masonic Lodge, the Kiwanis and the Lion's Club in Peterson and Everly. He was a chairman for the Sutherland School Board and served tirelessly on the Meals on Wheels program at the Senior Center in Everly and the Council on Aging. In his spare time, Ted loved to dance and as a former meatcutter, he enjoyed sharpening knives.
Mr. Kosta passed away at the Spencer Hospital on Tuesday, June 19, 2007 at the age of 96. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Velma Bertheson.
He is survived by his wife of 74 years, Lucy of Spencer; two daughters and their husbands: Mary Jo and Tom Hegel of Peterson, Iowa and Pat and Mark Van Horn of Colorado Springs, CO; three grandchildren; four great grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.
