JOHN J. MAURER KILLED BY BULL ATTACKED BY ANIMAL ON HIS RANCH IN TEXAS; LIVED ONLY A FEW HOURS
FORMER SPENCER RESIDENT

Was Clay County Farmer for Many Years; Moved to Texas in 1913; Has Brothers Here

Last week word came to Spencer of the sudden death of John J. Maurer who was killed by an enraged bull that attacked him while he was driving his cattle into the feed lot Friday, March 18, 1921. Mr. Maurer was carrying a pitchfork at the time he was attacked by the vicious animal but was unable to protect himself and suffered injuries from which he died a short time after. The noise of the combat drew the attention of the folks at the house and they ran out and succeeded in diverting the attention of the animal so that Mr. Maurer was able to crawl through the fence. He was taken to the house and a doctor was called at once but he lived only a few hours after the attack.

John Maurer was sixty-five years of age on the day that he was killed. He was a brother of Frank, Joe, Anicet, Charles, William Maurer and Mrs. A. Giedeman also two older brothers, Fred and Andrew. He with his family went from Spencer to Texas in the fall of 1913 and were living near the town of McAllen at the time of his death. He leaves a wife and four children to mourn his loss: Albert F. who lives on his father's farm on Willow Creek; Herman who lives on a farm near McAllen, Texas; his daughter, Maria, (Mrs. Carter) who lives near Galveston, Texas, and a younger, daughter Rose, who is still at home with her mother. John J. Maurer was one of the prosperous farmers of Clay county for many years before moving to Texas. The family resided for three years in Spencer before their removal to Texas.

John J. Maurer was born near Potosi Grant county, Wisconsin, and in May, 1884, was married to Mary Hoffrichter. John Maurer was a good citizen, an industrious and thrifty man. The bereaved family have the sympathy of their many friends in Spencer and Clay county.

The funeral services took place from the home at McAllen Monday, March 21, conducted by a priest of the Catholic church.

John J. Maurer is the second member of that family to meet with a violent death in the last few months. Fred F. Maurer, a nephew of the Spencer brothers, was trampled to death by his runaway team of horses at Arthur, North Dakota, last December. He was buried In Riverside here.
