Carroll H. Roe
Friends in Spencer were grieved but hardly surprised Tuesday morning to hear of the death of Carroll H. Roe, which occurred Monday night, October 2, 1922, at ten o'clock at the Presbyterian hospital in Omaha. Death was caused by endocarditis, a heart trouble. Mr. Roe was a prominent business man of Spencer and had been seriously ill at his home on East Third street for several weeks and was taken to Omaha September 7. Spencer friends visited him and his wife while he was a patient at the hospital and found him very hopeful and cheerful. Among the visitors wore E.L.C. White who discussed next summer's golfing with Mr. Roe, the latter expressing a desire to play a better game next season. Mrs. Roe accompanied her husband to Omaha and has been his constant attendant during his illness.
Mr. Roe was twenty-eight years of age. His parents are both dead but besides his wife, he is survived by four brothers; one of whom came to accompany Mr. and Mrs. Roe to Omaha. He was married five years ago, his wife being Miss Cecil Soper and the marriage taking place in Atlantic.
During the late world war Mr. Roe was a member of the band in the 88th Division, serving part of the time at Camp Dodge, Iowa, and for seven months with the division in France.
For the past few years he has been engaged in the grocery business, the firm name being Roe & Kohl and the two members maintaining stores at Anita, Iowa, and for a time at Red Oak, Iowa. The latter store was disposed of and the Spencer store purchased. Mr. and Mrs. Roe came to Spencer a little more than a year ago and Mr. Roe was in active control of the store here while Mr. Kohl was in Anita. During his residence here, Mr. RHoe has won the respect and good will of not only his many patrons but of a large circle of personal friends. He was a member of the Spencer Commercial club, the Spencer Golf and Country club, the Amercan Legion, the Masonic Order and Order of Elks. in all his obligations he was faithful and conscientious and careful and his death will be keenly felt in these circles.
During the several weeks of his illness the store has been in charge of J.C. Thompson. The body was taken from Omaha to Anita for interment, Mr. Thompson going from this city to attend the services.
