James Nelson, a prominent resident of Lincoln township, passed away at the Spencer Hospital Sunday morning June 20, 1920, at 5:35, at the age of seventy-eight years, one month, and five days. About three months ago Mr. Nelson developed a serious stomach trouble and was later removed to the Spencer Hospital where he underwent an operation technically known as a gastro-enterostomy.
James Nelson was born in Denmark on May 15, 1843. Following their marriage on April 18, 1870, Mr. and Mrs. Nelson sailed for America locating at Fairwater, Wisconsin, where they lived four years. They moved to Clay county in 1874 and have lived continuously on their farm in Lincoln township since 1877. To this union were born three children, Martin and Eliza, who have been making their home on the home farm, and Nick, residing just across the road. Mr. Nelson's wife, Sophia, died suddenly of appoploxy on November 2, 1898.
Mr. Nelson was an American citizen of the very highest type, standing for all that is good in every line of endeavor, outspoken in condemnation of all that did not meet his ideals of honor, sobriety, and integrity—a man of real worth.
Funeral service's wore held at the family home in Lincoln township at two o'clock, Wednesday afternoon and at two-thirty from the Danish Lutheran church in that township. Rev. I.Gertsen, pastor of that church and Rev. A.E. Gustafson, pastor of the Lutheran church at Spencer officiated. Burial was made in Riverside.
