Mrs. Rachel Dorland

Rachel Shaffer was born on March _, 1832(?) in Bedford County, Pennsylvania. When seven years of age she moved with her parents to Ashland County, Ohio. On October 2, 1851 she was married to D.W. Dorland and the following year they came to Iowa by team and settled in Clermont, Fayette county. To this union were born ten children, eight of whom survive her. Namely, Geo. W. and Elizabeth Mae Kane, Washington, W.A. at West Union, Iowa, E.A. of Reading, Minnesota, Mrs. R.T. Turner, Mrs. Robert Hanson and Mrs. J.E. Seaton of Spencer, Iowa.

In 1901 Mr. and Mrs. Dorland celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in the old home surrounded by their children and grandchildren.
About ten year sago Mr. Dorland passed away and after his death Mrs. Dorland sold the home and came to Spencer where she has made her home with her daughters.

She passed away March 6, 1915 on her 83rd birthday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Seaton, after a protracted illness of six months.
Brief funeral services were held Sunday afternoon and the remains accompanied by her three daughters of this city were taken to West Union for burial by the side of her husband.

Mrs. Dorland was a true christian woman of noble character, broad in her views and charitable toward all. One of her oft times quotations in the presence of those passing their opinion of others were:
"The sun shines on the just and unjust," and "Judge not that ye be not judged."
