The Herald is compelled this week to chronicle the death of another pioneer of Clay county and one of the best hearted men among the many who have made this county rank among the best in the great state of Iowa. Coming here in what are now called the "early days" he succeeded in overcoming all the difficulties surrounding the pioneers and, when the years of toll became heavy, he was enabled to live a life of ease only earned by hard labor.

Helon Wetmore, a resident of Clay county since 1873, passed away Friday, March 5, 1915, at the home of his son, Seymour, near Redwood Falls, Minnesota. Funeral services were held at the residence Sunday and the remains were taken to Everly for interment Tuesday morning. For several years he had not been in good health and the death of his wife last August preyed heavily upon his mind. It was thought that a change might be beneficial therefore he was taken to the home of his son in Minnesota. But it was of no avail.

Helon N. Wetmore was born in Jefferson county, New York, July 28, 1832, at the age of ten the family moved to Wisconsin where he grew to manhood and first fought the battles of the pioneers. He moved to Winneshiek county, Iowa, where, on January 18, 1858, he was united in marriage to Mrs. Lucy Wilson.

On the inauguration of the Civil war he joined the Union army as a member of Company C, Thirteenth Iowa Infantry. He passed through many of the more important engagements. Being honorably discharged he returned to Winneshiek county where he remained until 1873 when the family moved to Clay county. He purchased three hundred and twenty acres of raw land which was their home until 1896 when they moved to Everly where they had constructed a comfortable home.

Mr. Wetmore was a man who enjoyed every hour of his life and he was never to busy but when the advent of a friend into the home caused the cease of labor and called forth the hand clasp of good-fellowship. He was a man who never desired office but, for some years, he acted in the capacity of school treasurer as the cause of education had always found in him a stalwart champion. A good man has gone and the two sons, Thomas of Everly, and Seymour of Redwood Falls, have the sympathy of every resident of Clay county who was fortunate enough to know Helon Wetmore.
