A WELL KNOWN CITIZEN DEAD

Old Soldier and Prominent Mason Died Sunday Morning

Luke Becket, one of Spencer's best citizens died at his home Sunday morning at two o'clock.

Mr. Becket was born in Clark county, Indiana, Nov. 20th, 1844. At an early age with, his parents he moved to Adams county, Illinois, and from there he came to Dallas county, Iowa, where he resided for a number of years. In January, 1865, he enlisted in Co. D, 10th Iowa infantry and served until the close of the war. He then returned to Dallas county, and on Oct. 27, 1867, he was united in marriage to Miss Ann Peoples, and to them five sons were born, all living, Miles, D. E., Clarence, J. G. and W.A. The first three live in Spencer and were present at the funeral, the other boys live in Dunkirk, Montana, and were unable to be home for the funeral.

Mr. and Mrs. Becket left Dallas county, and moved to Boone county where they resided for a time, and then later moved to Perry where they lived for a short time, and later moved to Okobojl where Mr. Becket farmed for some time, and about sixteen years ago they moved to Spencer where they have resided since. Mr. Becket has been engaged in the real estate business since he moved to Spencer.

Mr. Becket was a member of the Masonic lodge, and was also a Royal Arch Mason. In both lodges he held offices of distinction, and rendered valuable services. For a number of years he taught a Sunday school class in the Congregational church, and his services were highly appreciated.

Mr.Becket was a good citizen, a good husband and a good father. On all moral questions he was found on the right side. He was a quiet and unassuming man, but he made and held close friends. He was a member of the G.A.R. Post of this city.

He leaves to mourn his loss, his wife, five sons, several brothers and sisters. The funeral was held from the Congregational church, the sermon being preached by Rev. J. O. Thrush, pastor of the Congregational church. The Masonic fraternity attended in a body, and conducted the services at the cemetery, giving their beautiful burial service.
