Daniel C. Gillespie, a long time resident of Spencer, and one of the best known citizens of Clay county passed away Friday, April 16 at 11:30 a. m.

Daniel C. Gillespie was born on March 29, 1847, in St. Lawrence county, New York.

At the age of four years Danny, as he was then called, was left an orphan—his father, mother and younger brother all died within ten days of one another.

His older brother then took him (unreadable) and in 1857, the brother, with his young charge moved to Wisconsin. Daniel entered school at Beloit, and later at Point Bluff, where his education was obtained, sufficient for all practical purposes of life.

At the close of the war Mr. Gillespie marched in Grand Review at Washington and from there went to Wisconsin where he was mustered out of the service.

On July 16, 1867 he was united in marriage to Miss Frances M. Gloyd in Delton, Wisconsin.

Leaving Wisconsin at the age of 22 he came to Charles City, Iowa, where he broke prairie and then moved to Clear Lake in 1869. From there he came to Spencer in the spring of 1870. This was eight years before any railroad had reached Spencer. Mr. and Mrs. Gillespie were the parents of eight children.

Surviving him are his wife and the following children, Maude Loomer, of Lake township, Edgar P. of Malta, Montana, Roy G. of Lake township and Mary Winn of Meadow township. James E., Arthur D., Daniel C., and Agnes M. preceded him in death. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Margaret Stevens of Mason City and nieces and nephews.

Rev. B.J. Trickey conducted funeral services at the house yesterday afternoon. Mrs. J. Elliot Gould sang "Saw Ye My Savior, Heard Ye the Glad Sound," accompanied by Mrs. B.R. Zink. The G.A.R. held their services at the house and the Odd Fellows had their ceremony at the graveside in Riverside cemetery. A squad of Sons of Veterans fired a salute over the grave.

The pallbearers were six nephews--John Gillespie, John Stevans, Dr. Tom Gillespie, Dr. Ed Gillespie, Earl Gillespie and Harry: Stevens. Honorary pallbearers were Roy Frad, F.J. O'Brien, J. F. Hirleman, C.M. Pinneo, Chris Mortenson and Dick Codington.

Relatives who came from a distance to attend the funeral John Gillespie from Appleton, Wisconsin; Drs. Tom and Ed Gillespie from Peoria, Ill.; Earl Gillespie of Beloit, Wis.; Mrs. Allie Wakefield, Baraboo, Wis.; Miss Mabel Scott, North Freedom, Wis.; Mrs. Margaret Stevens, Mr. and Mrs. A.W.
