Mr. Hastings had been in a very poor health for several months and his death was not unexpected.C.C. Hastings
C. C. Hastings, well known Spencer resident, passed away Wednesday morning at seven o'clock at the L.L. Atwood home on West Second street, following an illness of several months. He was forced to resign from his position as traveling salesman for the John A. Tolman grocery company last June and since then has been in a critical condition a good share of the time. He was confined to the Spencer hospital for several weeks in the summer but later grew stronger and was able to be up and around for a short time. Later he was again taken worse and for the past several months has been confined to his rooms at the Atwood home. His death came as a result of a combination of heart trouble and asthma.Mr. Hastings was born in Vermont, on a farm, and he was educated in the schools of Vermont and Boston, teaching during the winter time to pay his way. He came to Cherokee in 1888, and the next year to Spencer. For over forty years Mr. Hastings has traveled out of Spencer all through the northwest territory and as proof of his ability and worth in business circles it might be said he has represented the same company in all those years.
He is a man who has been prominent in politics and ran for state senator in 1910 on the republican ticket.
He has also been actively interested in local affairs serving as a member of the school board at the time the plans were being made for the new high school building.
Besides being well liked and highly respected in this community, he is known to have been a devoted and kind father. He has been a staunch republican and has always put the best of his efforts in everything he has ever undertaken. That he was appreciated by the company he traveled for , was shown when they refused to stop his pay at the time he found it necessary to tender his resignation on account of his health.
Mr. Hastings is survived by two daughters, Miss Glee Hastings, of Spencer, and Mrs. Walter Weise of Springfield, Mass. Miss Hastings had been doing work in the Near East until last summer and when her term expired she came home and has been caring for her father. Mrs. Weise arrived here last week, being called here on account of the critical condition of her father.
He also is survived by a son; Mr. Irving Hastings, of Garner, Iowa.
