Answers Final Roll Call

John Chalfant was born at Zanesville, Ohio, May 16, 1841, responded to the tattoo and was given his discharge at Gillett Grove Thursday, February 11, 1915, being nearly seventy-four years old.

At the age of twenty he enlisted in the Union army and was enrolled in Company I 20th Illinois Volunteer Infantry and fought for the Union and the flag.

He moved to Franklin County, Neb., and in 1875 was married to Christiana Phillips, and to them were born nine children of whom eight survive and were able to be present with him when the final summons came. They are Mrs. Phoebe Morris of Gillett Grove, John Chalfant Jr. of Webb, Silas, Guy and Clarence who are still at home, also Mrs. Dollie Reed and Mrs. Maggie McArtor both of Webb or vicinity. The name of the other was not reported. There are also thirteen grandchildren.

The funeral services were held the church at Gillett Grove last Friday afternoon by a comrade Chaplain A. L. Rucker of Spencer assisted by the pastor, Rev. R. J. Symons, and the body was laid to rest in the cemetery at Greenville.

He was a goodly man of genial disposition. We shall never forget the kindly greeting and generous welcome he gave us when we came here five years ago, and went out to look for friends and found many, and he was one that made us feel at home and has since stood by us. We think of him as a man. His battles are fought, his victories won and he has been discharged. And being wearied he has lain down to rest till the night is past.
