Eckie Jotham Manning, aged 46 years and 17 days, died on Sunday afternoon at 5 o'clock at the home of his wife's parents, Mr. and Mrs. G. Groth, after a long illness casued from leakage of the heart. Mr. Manning became seriously ill sometime ago at his home in Verden, Oklahoma, and his physicians in that city advised him to consult the Mayo Bros. at Rochester, Minnesota. he came to Spencer with his wife and sister, Mrs. C.R. Dahms, of Verden, a few weeks ago enroute to Rochester where it was found that nothing could be done for his relief. He returned to Spencer, coming to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Groth, where all that loving and kindly care could do was done by his faithful family.

Eckie Jotham Manning was born at Wilton Junction, Cedar county on April 15, 1874. At the ago of eighteen he came with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. G.W. Manning, to Clay county and this remained his home until the fall of 1903 when with his wife and children he moved to Verden, Oklahoma, where he lived until this last illness brought him to Spencer.

Mr. Manning was united in marriage on April 14, 1898, with Miss Tillie Thresa Groth of Spencer and to them two children were born, both daughters, who, with the wife and mother, survive him. The daughters are the Misses Trevenna and Anna Manning.

Beside his wife and children, Mr. Manning is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Manning of Spencer and the following brothers and sisters: Bert D. Manning, of Sutherland, Iowa; Orie D. Manning of Sidney, Montana; Mrs. C.R. Dahms of Verden, Oklahoma; Mrs. John Peasgood, Jr. of San Pedro, California; Mrs. William Sellers of Parshall, Minnesota; Mrs. C.A. Skov, Max M., Ernest G., Forest G., and Pearl A. Manning all of Spencer.

Mr. Manning was a faithful member of the M. E. church having been coverted to this faith in 1897 in Spencer.

During his residence In Clay county, Mr. Manning was a farmer and after his removal to Oklahoma he purchased a farm where the family lived for sometime and which is still in their possesion [sic]. For the last few years they have been living in Verden and Mr. Manning has been mail carier [sic].

The funeral services were conducted from the M. E. church in Spencer on Wednesday afternoon at two-thirty o'clock. Owing to tho absence of the Rev. F. C. Taylor, pastor of the church, the services were in charge of the Rev. E. Merle Adams, pastor of the Congregational church. Interment was In Riverside cemetery.

Relatives who came from away to attend these last rites were: Bert D. Manning of Sutherland; Mr. and Mrs. Orie D. Manning of sidney, Montana; and Mrs. C.R. Dahms of Verden, Oklahoma.
