A memorial service for Betty Hoover, 81, of Spencer, will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church in Webb today, Aug. 2. The Rev. Elliott Butler III will lead the 11 a.m. service. Mrs. Hoover died at the Ruthven Care Center on July 30. Interment will be at Garfield Cemetery in Webb. Warner Funeral Home of Spencer is in charge of arrangements.

Betty Jane (Rustan) Hoover, the daughter of Axell and Fannie (Wise) Rustan, was born in Webb on Dec. 26, 1920. She graduated from Webb Community School in 1938 and then attended Buena Vista College, where she received her elementary education endorsement in 1940.

She taught first and second grades at Cornell for two years. In 1943, she began working for the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Washington, D.C. She married Don Hoover on Feb. 7, 1944 in Winchester, Va.

She returned to Webb to teach while Mr. Hoover served in the military during World War II. After her return, the couple farmed in the Webb community for 34 years. During that time, she taught school for 26 years in Webb, Gillett Grove and South Clay community schools. She retired from teaching in 1981.

In 1988, the couple moved to Spencer. Mrs. Hoover has been a resident at the Ruthven Care Center since 2001.

She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church of Webb, the National Education Association and the Iowa State Education Association.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

Survivors include her two sons and their wives: Don "Rusty" and Jan of Webb, and Tom and Jane of Mallard; one daugther, Jane Swanson of Issaquah, Wash.; six grandchildren; one sister, Ardelle Block of Spirit Lae; other relatives and friends.
