Charles H. Thurston, 1919-2007

Charles "Chick" Henry Thurston, the son of Charles E. and Neenah Thurston, was born August 18, 1919 in Spencer, Iowa. He received his education and graduated from Spencer High School and later joined the Coast Guard.

On August 11, 1946, Charles married Ruth (Fraser) at the First Christian Church in Spencer, IA. Following their marriage, he worked in sales at Sportsman's in Spencer, Iowa for 10 years and later in sales at Herbster's Electric in Spencer. After retirement, he helped his wife in the restaurant. Since Charles enjoyed all kinds of sports he became a basketball referee and baseball coach.

Charles lived in Spencer all of his life and was a member of the First Congregational Church in Spencer. He loved his grandchildren very much and cared for them while their parents worked.

On Monday, March 5, 2007, Charles passed away at his home in Spencer at the age of 87. He was preceded in death by his parents and twin brother, Elmer.

Charles is survived by his wife of 60 years, Ruth of Spencer; one son, Blaine and his wife, Judy Thurston of Spencer; one daughter, Laurie Sorrell of Spencer; three grandchildren: Cory (Lisa) Sorrell of Pittsburgh, PA, Josh Sorrell of Ankeny, IA, James (Sandy) Thurston of Ankeny, IA; four step-grandchildren: Kevin (Elaine) Cronk, Kenny (Beth) Cronk, Lori (Eric) Bales and Kerry Cronk; four great grandchildren; one sister, Elvinah Davis of Mason City, IA; other relatives and many friends.

Interment in Riverside cemetery
