Marion E. Daugherty, the son of John and Mary Jane Pitzer Daugherty, was born July 11, 1909, in Greenville, IA. He received his education in Greenville and Gillett Grove and later attended barber college in Des Moines, IA and graduated in 1932.
On February 17, 1937, Marion married Evelyn Frutchey in Milford, IA and following their marriage, they farmed in the Gillett Grove area for 8 years. They lived in Dickinson County for two years and then returned to Clay County where he had since made his home.
While living in the Spencer area, Marion farmed for many years before moving into town and going to work as a custodian at the Grace United Methodist Church. After his retirement in April of 1976 from the church, Marion started to work at the Warner Funeral Home and helped there for over 20 years. His loving and caring manner was something that everyone admired in Marion and it seemed as though he knew everyone and didn’t have an enemy in the world. The Warner Funeral Home will always be indebted to his loving service.
Following the death of his first wife, Evelyn on September 8, 1979, Marion continued to work at the funeral home and later married Mable Van Vickle on July 12, 1989 in Jackson, MN.
On Thursday, September 26, 2002, Marion passed away at the Spencer Hospital at the age of 93. He was preceded in death by his parents; his two wives: Evelyn and Mable; and a son, Ronnie. Left to cherish his memory are his children: Roger and his wife, Yvonne Daugherty of Spencer, IA; Marilyn and her husband, Francis Hoffrichter of Milford, IA; Mary Jane Daugherty of Fresno, CA; a step-son and his wife: Robert & Pam Van Vickle of Hot Springs, AR; 10 grandchildren; many great grandchildren; several great-great grandchildren; as well as other relatives and friends.
