Lyle Lewis Nitzel, 1909-2002

Lyle Lewis Nitzel, the son of William and Hannah Dinghly Nitzel, was born May 6, 1909, in Merrick County, Nebraska. His parents passed away when he was a young child. Irvin and Lydia Zimmerman of Spencer raised Lyle and he received his early education from country schools in the Spencer area.

On June 25, 1939, Lyle married Hazel Marie Noehren, in Spencer, Iowa. Following their marriage, they farmed in Chokio, Minnesota, until 1968. They moved to Spencer where they lived from 1968 to 1979 and Lyle worked for Jones Transfer Company. Lyle worked for the Lost Island Golf Course in Ruthven until 1982. Lyle and Hazel then moved to Hot Springs, South Dakota, until 1999 when they returned to Spencer.

On August 21, 2002, Lyle passed away at the Longhouse Residence in Spencer, Iowa, at the age of 93. He is preceded in death by his parents; Lydia and Irvin Zimmerman; four brothers: Lawrence, William, Ray and Frank; one granddaughter, Amy Sue Nitzel in 1972.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Hazel, of Spencer; one son and his wife, William and Ruby Nitzel, of Spencer; two daughters: Charlotte Knapp of Hot Springs, South Dakota, and Mary Herrera and her husband, Leonard, of Bellevue, Nebraska; seven grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; three step-grandchildren and six step-great grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
