1854 - 1940Dickens--Mrs. Melissa Culver was born at Mineral Point, Wis., Feb. 1, 1854, and died at her home in Dickens Saturday, Feb. 3, at the age of 86 years and 2 days. She had been in poor health for several years. Her death followed an illness of four months duration during which she was lovingly cared for by her daughter. She was married to George Watson Culver Aug. 3, 1874, at Arreno, Wis. In 1886 they moved to a farm near Dickens and she remained in this community for the rest of her life. She was the mother of five children, William, who preceded her in death; Mrs. Grace Storey, Harvey Culver and Dewey Culver of Dickens. A son, Leonard, of Oelricks, S.D., and a foster daughter, Mrs. Dolly Halverson of Edgerton, Wis. Besides her children, she leaves 29 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren and 20 great, great grandchildren, besides many friends and neighbors.
Mrs. Culver was well known and highly respected in Dickens and vicinity. She was a kind and devoted wife and mother and was always considerate and helpful to others in time of need. She joined the Rebekah lodge May 21, 1897, and was a charter member of the Congregational church Ladies' Aid in which she was a tireless worker.
Interment in Dickens cemetery.
