Osceola Sentinel, Osceola, IowaJasper Newton Clevenger, the son of Eliza and George Washington Clevenger, was born in Ohio, November 7, 1847. He was 84 years and 22 days of age. He was in apparent good health until Saturday, November 28th, when he became suddenly ill with an acute attack of indigestion and passed away on the 30th. He leaves to mourn his death four daughters, Mrs. Ida Oswalt of Weldon, Iowa; Mrs. May Johnson of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Mrs. Edna Murphy of Alaska, and Mrs. Dora Pinegar of Lovilla, Iowa; and two sons, Benjamin of Novinger, Missouri, and Lewis of Ithaca, New York. Two sons, Henry and Arthur, and his wife, Mary Saddoris Clevenger, preceded him in death.
At the Webster Funeral Home Tuesday afternoon at 4 o’clock the last sad rites were held for a Civil War veteran, Jasper Newton Clevenger, who died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. L. Oswalt in Weldon, Monday, November 30th, at 10:30 in the morning.
Interment was at 5 o’clock.at Greenwood cemetery. Thus ended the mortal life of the last member of Co. B, 34th Iowa Infantry. In his passing the public is again reminded that the heroes of 61-65 are fast fading into the great beyond, “on fame’s eternal camping ground their silent tents are spread.”
Rev. McCallon of the Church of Christ conducted the services, praising the career of the deceased and especially dwelling upon that part relating to his volunteer services during the period when the nation’s life was in the balance, of the devotion and sacrifices made to keep the flag he loved the emblem of the free, of his value as a citizen enhanced by reason of the great understanding he had gained in a test of individual as well as national honor. His services as a soldier covered three years of his early manhood and as his record in military life was fine so were the days of his civil life.
Note: By the time he was the last of his regiment, a significant part of his story seems to have been forgotten. Not only had Jasper enlisted in the 34th Iowa Infantry in 1864, but so had his father, George Washington Clevenger and two older brothers on August 11, 1862.
Both Lewis C. Clevenger and William H. Clevenger reported their age to be 18; though on previous census documents there were a couple years difference in their ages.
