Ella J. White was born September 28, 1829 in Wayne county, Indiana, and lived there until she was married to E. H. Wiley, May 20 1847. They came to Clarke county in 1858 and have since lived here. To this marriage union four children were born, all of whom are living, namely, N.E. Wiley, of Osceola, Iowa; Geo. W. Wiley, of Hutchinson, Kansas; Lizzie Newman, of Osceola, and Mrs. J.W. Canney, of Des Moines, Iowa. Besides giving a mother’s care and attention to this family she was as a mother to Aaron Blanchard and Cora E. Shinn, having raised her from infancy. At time of death N.E. and Lizzie were the only children present, others not being able to reach her bedside before life’s light had gone.

She united with the Christian church at Bethel, Wayne county, Ind., at the age of twenty and remained a consistent member of that church until she came to Clarke county, Iowa in 1858. There being no church near their farm they held meetings in a school house until Union Chapel was built and there she served as deaconess for five years until coming to Osceola, after which she served in same capacity for a number of years in the Christian church here.

She lived the life of a true and faithful Christian until her death which occurred Friday morning January 22, 1904.

The funeral services were conducted at the Christian church in Osceola, Saturday afternoon at 2:30 in the presence of many sympathizing friends. Rev. Pitcher, of Des Moines, delivered an impressive sermon upon the life of the deceased after which the remains were interred in the Osceola cemetery.
