Al Babbitt, son of Silas and Elizabeth (White) Babbitt, was born at Canton, Illinois, on June 26, 1863, and departed this life at Kirksville, Missouri, on Thursday, February 5, 1920, at the age of 56 years, 7 months and 10 days.

When a small boy he came with his parents to Iowa and located on a farm near Malvern in Mills county. Here he grew to manhood. On Thursday February 5, 1885 he was united in marriage to Mae E. Claypool, of Thayer, and it was on the thirty-fifth anniversary of this marriage that his death occurred. Soon after their marriage the young couple emigrated to Nebraska, driving through in a lumber wagon. They settled on a farm near Ulysses, in Butler county, where they made their home until 1894 when they returned to Iowa, locating at Murray. In 1903 they removed to Afton which has since been their home.

Six children were born to this union, two of whom, Lulu Maude, who died in infancy, and the first born, Frank Arthur, who met his death on November 19, 1918, have preceded him to the Better Land. The children surviving are Rose, wife of John G. Bartholomew, of Keokuk, Blanche, wife of George B. Shelton, of Chariton. Merrill of Davenport and Clarence at home.

Funeral services were held last Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at the M.E. church conducted by Rev. S. Mitchell, assisted by the Masons, both at the church and the grave, the Masons having complete charge of the services at the grave. Interment was made in Greenlawn cemetery.

There was a general feeling of sadness over this community last week when word came from Kirksville that Al Babbitt had passed away, following an operation for cancer of the stomach. He had been in ill health for some time and despite all that good care and medical treatment could do he grew steadily worse. He was operated on Monday, Feb. 2 and a two-pound cancer removed, and for a time seemed to be improving and hopes were entertained for his complete recovery, but Wednesday night reaction set in and he passed away Thursday evening at 9:50.
