Osceola, IowaHugh Austin Smith, son of Hugh Todd and Ella Raines Smith, was born in Woodland, Iowa on April 18, 1887 and departed this life on December 21, 1971.
His early years were spent helping his father in his blacksmith shop where the love, care and training of horses started; and continued for over 75 years.
In 1909 he was united in marriage to Retta Burngarner. To this union two sons were born, Lyle R. and Donald.
Preceding him in death are his parents; his son, Lyle R.; two sisters and two brothers.
Surviving to mourn his passing is his wife, Retta; son, Donald and daughter-in-law, Gladys of Garden Grove; four grand children; eight great grandchildren; sisters Bertha Bumgarner of Norwalk and Coy Albright of Polk City; nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
Everyone who knew Austin became a friend. At a very early age he chose the Savior as his Guide.
Memorial services were held at the Webster-Kale Funeral Home on Thursday, December 23, 1971 at 1:30 with the Reverend Ivan C Bys officiating. Interment was in the Garden Grove Cemetery.
