Lillah Ethel Carder, daughter of Joseph N. and Amelia C. McGuire, was born January 22, 1882 in Clarke County, Iowa and died at the Clarke County Hospital on Sunday, November 11, 1979 at the age of 97 years, nine months and 20 days.

On October 18, 1899 she was married to Clarence E. Carder and they resided on a farm in Washington Township for 21 years. They took a foster son, Tracey Emick, into their home when he was two years old and later they were parents of a daughter Aletha Beatrice.

After leaving the farm in 1920 they moved to an acrage in Murray and owned and operated the Farmer's Union Feed Store.

After the death of her husband in 1953 she moved to Osceola. She received much enjoyment from being close to her granddaughters and great grandchildren. She loved working in her flower gardens and making rugs and was always ready to give a helping hand when needed. Ill health forced her to up her home in 1975 and she was a resident of Americana North and Leisure Manor since then. She never lost her great sense of humor or wit and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her two sisters, Orpha Cottrell and Edith Ritchey; a brother, Elmer, a great granddaughter, Conda McDowell, her foster son and his wife, Beulah Hanlin Carder.

She leaves to mourn her passing, daughter, Aletha B. Smith and husband, Cecil "Red"; granddaughters, Cecelia McDowell and husband, Con; Juanita McWilliams and husband Dick, all of Osceola and Dianna Robbins of San Jose, California; great grandchildren Craig, Coyle, and Christi McDowell; Stephen, Scott, and Shelly McWilliams; Patrick and Kathy Robbins; and a great great granddaughter, Melissa Sue McDowell; also nieces, nephews, and a host of friends, who affectionally knew her as Grandma.

Graveside services were held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 14 with Rev. Leonard McIntire officiating and Watts-Lindsey Funeral Home in charge. Interment in Murray Cemetery.
