The Osceola Democrat, Osceola, Iowa

Ben Jackson, a well respected colored farmer living on the Talbott place two or three miles southeast of Osceola, died Tuesday morning from injuries received in a runaway Monday afternoon.

He had started to drive to the Dalby farm a mile south of his place. Messrs. S.S. Dalby Jr. and Charley West who were in the Dalby barn, first saw the team running south in an unmanageable manner. Just before reaching the bridge they were going at a terrible speed. A turn at the bridge caused the wagon to strike the bridge railing and it overturned several times, throwing Mr. Jackson out in a manner that resulted in fracture of the skull.

The boys were at the scene in two or three minutes, but found Mr. Jackson insensible. He was carried to Mr. Dalby’s house where he remained an hour. On advice of Dr. Roberts, he was moved to his home where he died at 6:30 Tuesday morning. He was unmarried and lived with his brother-in-law, Charley Whitney.

Mr. Jackson was an industrious, temperate, intelligent citizen. Deceased was twenty-six years of age and was born in Missouri. Services were held in A.M.E. church Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 after which the remains were interred in the Osceola cemetery.
