Hans Oehlert

Hans Oehlert, son of Hans and Magdalena Schmidt Oehlert, was born June 21, 1863 in the province of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, and died March 14, 1950 at a local hospital following a short illness, at the age of 86 years, 3 months, 21 days.

At the age of seven years he came with his parents and one sister Maggie Oehlert Woods (now deceased) to the United States.

The family settled on a farm in Jackson township, and he attended the rural schools of his community. He was united in marriage to Mattie E. Penick Feb. 4, 1886, and to this union were born three children, Emmett, Russell who died in infancy and Herschel A. Oehlert.

After his marriage he was engaged in farming for several years, then the family moved to Woodburn, Iowa, where he ran a hardware store a few years, then again went on the farm south of Woodburn known as the Lowe farm, where he lived for many years.

Following his son Herschel's marriage in 1919, he again moved to Woodburn where he worked for the Dalby Lumber Co.

In 1926 he moved to New Sharon, Iowa, where he was manager of the Farmers Elevator Co., for seven years. In 1933 he returned to Clarke county and again engaged in farming for several years on the Lowe farm.

He moved to Woodburn where he was employed by the Frank Boor Grain & Coal Co., until about a year preceding his death.

After the death of his wife in 1945, he spent the remainder of his life in the home of his son, Herschel A. Oehlert in Woodburn.

He was a member of the Methodist church in Woodburn and also of Unity Lodge 212, A. F. and A. M. He acted as secretary of the lodge for many years and on his 85th birthday was presented with a diamond set Masonic pin as a token of appreciation of his faithful service to the lodge.

At the time of his passing he was treasurer of the Town of Woodburn and was always interested in the affairs of his community.

He leaves to mourn his passing, his sons, daughter-in-law; six grandchildren; Emmett Oehlert, Jr., Elgin, Ill., Rita Judkins, Des Moines, Iowa; Florence Conner, Kellogg, Idaho; J. D. Oehlert, Los Angeles, Calif., Robert and William Oehlert, Woodburn; six great-grandchildren, on sister-in-law Mrs. Stella Blakely, nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.

One grandson, Herschel Allen Oehlert, Jr. preceded him in death, July 6, 1943. His life was long and useful and his kindness and cheerfulness endeared him to all with whom he came in contact. He will be greatly missed by his family, his friends, and his community.

Services were held in the Methodist church, Woodburn, Friday, March 17, 1950 at 2:00 p.m. Officiating was Rev. Archie Beal of Russell, with the Forster Funeral Home in charge of services. Final resting place, Woodburn cemetery.

Relatives attending the services from out of town were : Emmett Oehlert, Jr., Elgin, Ill.; Joe D. Oehlert, Los Angeles, Calif.; Rita Judkins, Des Moines; Mrs. G. O. Smith, Fairfield; Mr. and Mrs. Ray Woods, Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Groves, all of New Sharon, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Jay Latcham of Sigourney, Iowa, Mrs. Mayme Boor of Osceola and Mrs. Gertie Hart of Nevada, Iowa.
