Martishey Williamson, daughter of Richard and Elizabeth Lambert Williamson, was born in Knox county Missouri, Feb. 17, 1846 and died at her home in New Virginia, Iowa, December 21, 1928, aged 82 years, 10 months and 4 days.

When three years of age, she came to Warren county, Iowa, and then two years later moved to Clarke county, where she grew to womanhood. On June 3, 1866 she was united in marriage to Reason Thomas Hudgel also of Clarke County, where they made their home for 52 years.

She being the last of nine children, four brothers and four sisters having preceded her in death. Some 65 years ago when but a young girl she joined the United Brethren church at Liberty, Iowa. That her loyalty to her church was never questioned and as a worker she was untiring as long as her health would permit. During all these years their home was the minister’s home and ministers in great numbers can testify to her hospitality. She attended with great regularity the business meetings of the circuit with which their church was a part, and thus gave great encouragement to many a minister who might otherwise have been disheartened.

On March 1, 1918 they moved to New Virginia, Iowa but continued her connection with the church of her choice. As a member of the Woman’s Relief Corps, of New Virginia, she gave encouragement and financial help and thus relieved a situation that otherwise might have been distressing. On account of the disease that preyed upon her she has not been able to do any active or charity work since coming to New Virginia.

During all these years she has been a patient sufferer and has had the tender care of her thoughtful husband, who at this time is not able to attend these last sad rites. For many years she has taken great comfort in reading from her well-worn Bible. When others came to her in their times of distress and temptation she wisely consoled them and instructed by reading portions of the Holy Scriptures.

Having no children, they raised a niece from the age of six to womanhood, now Mrs. A.L. Martin.

She leaves to mourn her passing her aged husband, a number of nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Funeral services were conducted on Monday afternoon, December 24, from the Christian church in New Virginia.
