Celebrate Golden Wedding

Murray News,

The home of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Homewood west of Hopeville in Pleasant township Union county, was the scene of a happy gathering of relatives and friends last Thursday evening, June 28th, the occasion being a celebration of the 50th wedding anniversary of these most highly respected citizens. About 80 guests were present to enjoy the social evening and congratulate Mr. and Mrs. Homewood upon their completion of a half a century of wedlock.

The life of these estimable people is quite interesting. The “groom” was born in England near London in 1834. He crossed the ocean with his parents three times when a mere child, finally settling in Ohio, U.S.A., then to Iowa in 1856 and settled southwest of Hopeville where he still lives and owns land, Mr. and Mrs. Homewood now living in the same house (although remodeled) in which they ate their first meal alone after their marriage which took place in Osceola, June 28, 1867, after a drive from near Ellston.

Mr. Homewood made an over-land trip, by oxen, to Pike’s Peak during the gold fever days. When 21 or 22 years of age he came to Iowa and bought land, as already stated, from the Government, then went back to Ohio and by oxen team brought with him to Iowa a sister and brother and together they built a log cabin on the banks of Grand river, and a year later the rest of the family came “west” to Iowa and joined them.

Mrs. Homewood (Louisa McClurg) is a native of Ohio, having been born in the Buckeye state in 1846. She came to Wayne county, Iowa, in 1855, and in 1867 accepted the proffered hand of the man she loved, and begun the happy wedded life which has now passed the half-century mark.

The refreshments for the happy occasion consisted of fruit, ice cream and cake.

The many friends of Mr. and Mrs. Homewood extend them congratulations and best wishes for a continuation of m any more happy years of wedlock.
