Mrs. S. M. Clark

Funeral services for Mrs. S. M. Clark, 65, who passed away at her home at Woodburn last Wednesday, were held from the Woodburn Christian church Friday afternoon, with the Rev. J. E. Clark of Cantrill, officiating. Interment was in Woodburn cemetery.

Mrs. Clark was born in Clark county and lived most of her life here, save for fifteen years spent in Nebraska, from 1905 until 1920.

Bettie Jane Oliver, oldest daughter of W. L. S. and Permella Jane Oliver was born one mile west of East Concord, March 25, 1880.

Her early life was spent in Clarke county. At the age of fifteen years she was left with her father to care for the home and brothers and sisters until her marriage. Concord was her first place to attend school, Sunday school and church. At sixteen years of age she was converted and baptized under the ministry of Reverend M. S. Clark, later her father-in-law.

When twenty-two, she married S. M. Clark. To this union three daughters and one son came to bless their home, namely Fay, Marlene, Ethel and Roy.

In 1905 they took a claim at Dunning, Nebraska, where they lived for seven years, experiencing hail and sand storms and a prairie fire. Then they lived at Broken Bow, Nebraska, one year. They came back to Iowa in 1920 where they lived at Smyrna for twenty-three years, then two years at Woodburn.

She had been in constant failing health since living in Woodburn, departing this life December 19, 1945, at the age of sixty-five years, eight months and twenty-four days.

Left to mourn her passing were her loving husband, four children-Mrs. Charles Bretz of Garden Grove, Mrs. Merrill Malone of Chariton, Mrs. L. G. Miller of Osceola, and Roy of Oskaloosa; five brothers-Milt of Broken Bow, Nebraska, Benjamin of Clark, Missouri, Joe of Chariton, and John and Ed of Woodburn; and two sisters-Mrs. C. B. Peterson of Pavilion, Wyoming, and Mrs. T. F. Horton of Osceola.
