Alleta Arlene (Allen) Black was born July 25, 1913, in rural Marion County, Iowa to E. Vint and Eva (Marshall) Allen. She passed away Oct. 4, 1999, at Lucas County Health Center in Chariton.

Arlene attended various schools-Blue Bird in Marion County, Garden Grove in Decatur County and Liberty in Clarke County.

She married Robert (J.R.) Black on April 25, 1933. To this union four children were born, Georgia, Bob, Glen and Betty. For most of their married life, they lived on the Black family farm. After Robert's death in 1988, Arlene remained on the farm until 1994 when she made her home with her daughter, Georgia, in Chariton.

Arlene was a true homemaker. She enjoyed gardening, quilting and cooking for her family, including such favorites as fried potatoes, homemade bread and "pink" sugar cookies for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

At an early age, she gave her life to Jesus Christ. She was a member of the Bethel Chapel Christian Union Church in Clarke County.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband Robert; son Bob; and infant sister; sisters Vivian Kilts and Winifred Martin; and brothers Paul Allen and Denzil Allen.

Surviving are daughters Georgia Black of Chariton and Betty Black of Glendale, Ariz.; son Glen Black of Lucas; daughter-in-law Virginia Black of Knoxville; grandsons Willy Black and wife Deb of Osceola, Galen Black and wife Tammy of Chariton, Ron Black of Knoxville; and granddaughter Robin Black of Monchengladbach, Germany.

She is also survived by the joy of her life, her four great-grandchildren, Colton Robert Black, Lindsey Sue Black, Briellyn Marie Black and Elyssa Jean Black. Also surviving are sisters Othella Black and husband Wayde, Georgia Crooks, Elaine Hall and husband Darwin, and Geneva Long and husband Leland; brother-in-law Richard Martin; sisters-in-law Elizabeth Snuggs and Joyce Allen, both of Chariton, Hazel Welch of San Clemente, Calif., Ruby Black of Madrid; Lois Culbertson of Chariton, and Frances Coffman of North Aurora, Ill., She will be missed by them as well as a host of friends.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8, 1999 at the Fielding Funeral Home with Pastors Hearold McElwee and Gearold McElwee officiating. Burial was in the Bethel Chapel Cemetery. Serving as bearers were Stan Black, Roger Black, Noel Allen, Rusty Haltom, George Orwig, Edward Weaklend, Kenny Long, Larry Ratliff and Ken Crooks. Honorary bearers include Ron Black and Darrel Slone. Memorials may be made in her name to the Bethel Chapel Christian Union Church of the Chariton Christian Union Church.
