March 13, 1962 , page 6Funeral services were held in Osceola Saturday afternoon for Miss Nellie Bonham, 76 year-old life-time resident of Clarke county and retired Osceola elementary school teacher for half a century, who died last Wednesday night in her sleep of a heart ailment.
Rev. Clinton D. Wolf, pastor of the Osceola Christian church and Rev. Charles C. Miller of Des Moines conducted the services in the Webster Funeral Home. Burial was in the Green Bay cemetery in Clarke county.
The daughter of Titus and Mary Johnson Bonham, she was born Dec. 10, 1885, in Clarke county. Miss Bonham had lived all of her life in the county and taught first and second grades in the Osceola school system from 1911 until her retirement in June, 1960.
Her distinguished career as a teacher and her contributions to church and community affairs were recognized with public honors when she received the Osceola Community Service Award in 1951. Miss Bonham is the only woman to have received that award. Miss Bonham had taught the second grade for the first 17 years of her career and had requested a transfer to the first grade where she remained until her retirement.
For many years she had been active in the Osceola Christian church with emphasis on the church education program. Since her retirement, Miss Bonham had been active in the elementary education department of the church and was a member of the church education committee at the time of her death.
Miss Bonham was a member of the P. E. O. Sisterhood, the Business and Professional Women’s Club, the Osceola Woman’s Club, the Chautauqua Circle and the Iowa State Educational Association.
Surviving are her cousins, Mrs. June Lauvstad, who made her home in Osceola with Miss Bonham in her youth; Roy Crew, Hallie Crew, Jessie Peck, Zoe Zurich, Hoyte Bonham, Earl Archer, Don Archer, Doris Dowdie, Charles Archer and Clifford Archer. She was preceded in death by one brother, Harry.
