Decatur County Journal, Decatur County, Iowa
December 22, 1898

Joseph Richard Rilea was born in Brown County, Ohio, April 18, 1819, and died at his home near Hopeville, Iowa, December 15, 1898, after an illness of only two days. He came to Clarke County in 1853, and settled in the home in which he died. Though he was not able to enter the army in '61, yet he furnished one son as a faithful soldier and was not indifferent or neglectful of the needs of the homes in southern Iowa and northern Missouri, in those days when courage was needed at home as well as on the battlefield.

Among those in attendance at the funeral were Mrs. L.D. Miller and Mrs. H.J. Landes, of Leon, daughters of the deceased.

In his death the community has lost a worthy and honored citizen, the cause of Christ a faithful member, and the home a faithful and indulgent father. His life as well as his death showed the wisdom of the choice he made in early life when he accepted Christ as his Savior, and were he able to speak to us today he would say, "Take Christ as your hope."

The funeral services were held from his late home December 17, by the writer. The remains were interred in the Gregg Cemetery.
