George W. Swabb, son of John and Mary Emery Swabb, was born Oct. 13, 1854, in Clarke county, Iowa, and departed this life while in a hospital in Osceola, Mar. 17, 1940, at the age of 85 years, 5 months and 3 days.

His father, a native of Pennsylvania and after the death of his mother, at the age of twelve, came west. After enduring many hardships, he finally found a home In Illinois with a kind hearted man, George W. Pickle where he had a good home until he was grown to manhood.

He was married in Illinois to Mary Emery, sister to Dr. Emery, who will be remembered as a pioneer doctor of Clarke county. They moved to Clarke county in 1854, where he entered the land known as the Swabb homestead, 6 miles southwest of Murray, making their home with a neighbor while their log cabin was being built. It was here on the porch of the neighbor's home, screened in by quilts and carpets, that the subject of this sketch made his appearance on the stage of life, and was named George W. in honor of the benefactor who befriended his father.

George Swabb was the oldest son of a family of ten children and after the death of his father, which occurred when he was 18, he was his mother's helper in caring for the family.

He was married to Mary E. Moon, Jan. 7, 1879. To this union, two children were born, Mrs. Mae Rilea of Woodburn, and Guy, deceased in 1930; six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren and one foster grandchild. He was united with the Christian church at Hopeville in 1864. He was an elder on the church board for several years, then changed his membership to the Murray church after moving here in 1911. He remained an honorary elder until his death. Failing health had kept him from church services for some time. He was a loyal friend, highly respected citizen and a kind and indulgent husband and father.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon in the Murray Christian church with Rev. Warren Koon of Omaha and Rev. Ray Swartz of Murray officiating. Music was furnished by the Christian church quartette. Burial was in the Murray cemetery
under direction of the Watts Funeral service.
