W. L. Marquis

William Lawrence Marquis was born near Woodburn, Iowa August 5, 1883, and passed from this life in the Clarke County hospital March 7, 1957, at the age of 73 years, 7 months and 2 days. He spent his early life farming near Woodburn and all his life was spent in and around Woodburn.

On June 28, 1911, he was united in marriage to Jessie Clark and began their wedded life in Woodburn. To this union three girls and one boy were born, Forest, Aletha, Celesta and Marcella.

Leaving farming he moved into Woodburn going into the grocery business and continued this mission until retiring and carried on his insurance business until his passing.

Early in life he confessed faith in Christ and joined the Christian Church. His parents preceded him in death some time since; a sister, Mrs. Dowell having passed on December 1, 1948.

He leaves the wife at home; the son, Forest and family of Ft. Dodge; Mrs. Aletha Marwede and family of Decatur, Georgia; Celeste Hamilson of Whittier, Calif., and Mrs. Marcelle Siniff, Cedar Rapids, and a daughter of the first marriage, Maxine Osland, San Antonio, Texas; seven grandchildren, six boys and one girl; two brothers, Clarence of Tucson, Arizona, and Guerney of Woodburn; two sisters Mrs. Carmickle of Newton and Mrs. Golda Coons of Tucson.

Laurence gathered about him a goodly number of acquaintances and friends as he went in and out of his community. This marks the passing of a long life lived entirely in our community.

Funeral services were held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Methodist Church at Woodburn, Rev. Clark officiating. Mrs. Joy Powell furnished the music. Pallbearers were Lew Terhune, Floyd Wilson, Russell Boor, John R. Evans, Glen Cottrell and George Westbrook. Burial at the Woodburn cemetery with Forster funeral Service in charge.
