Jacob M. Linder was born in Hardin county, Kentucky, January 4, 1828 and died at his home in Osceola, September 16, 1899. His age being sixty-one years, eight months and twelve days. He moved from his native state with his parent when two years old, to Monroe county, Indiana. Remaining here a number of years, he moved again to Marshall county, Illinois, and in the spring of 1858, he came with his father to Clarke county, Iowa, settling on a farm near Lacelle, Bro. Linder was united in marriage to Miss Jane P. Hunt, of Marshall county, Illinois on the 3rd of November 1858. To them as parents were born five children, Jonas A., Sarah E., Mary S., Lydia S. and Martha M., all living except one. Bro. Linder spent the earlier part of his life quietly as a farmer, and after coming to this county he endeared himself to his neighbors and friends, and served the community faithfully in various ways, being elected to adjust the peace for thirteen years in his township. In the fall of 1873 he was elected county treasurer of Clarke county, and moved to Osceola about the 25th of November 1878. After serving as county treasurer four years, Bro. Linder was chosen county recorder, which place he faithfully and efficiently filled four years, to the satisfaction of all his constituents. The subject of our notice embraced a hope in Christ and he united with the Bethel Baptist church in Monroe county, Indiana, when about nineteen years old. After coming to this county he went into the Vernal Baptist church at Lacelle as one of the constituent member, in 1854 and was ordained as a deacon in this church. After moving to Osceola, he transferred his membership from Vernal to the Osceola Baptist church, remained in this body until his decease. He was also a honored member of the Masonic Fraternity; but his work is done and he has entered into rest. His affliction was protracted yet he endured patiently to the end. Bro. Linder was a kind husband, and indulgent father, a good brother, a kind neighbor, a true Christian and an unfailing friend. He leaves his wife and four children, with a large circle of relatives and friends, to mourn his departure. But they sorrow not as others which have no hope. The funeral took place at the family residence in Osceola, being conducted by the Rev. F. Edwards, pastor of the Baptist church, after which the remains were borne to the Lacelle cemetery and deposited in the grave to await the resurrection of the just.
