Osceola Sentinel , Osceola, Iowa
January 30, 1919 , page 4

Though his death came not entirely unexpected, Osceola and vicinity were around Monday afternoon to an emotion of sincere regret and deep sympathy when it was announced that J. B. Wells had quietly passed away at his home in the city.

Mr. Wells was at his Coal and Feed business December 10 and fell fracturing his hip and since that time he suffered intense pain. His symptoms after that gave hopes for his recovery until a relapse came a week ago.

J.B. Wells was a man widely known and greatly beloved in Clarke county. His absence from his place of business and from the lodge and church circles wherein he moved is noted with the deepest regrets.

J.B. Wells was born in Belmont county, Ohio, August 14, 1838. His mother passed away in 1852 and the following he, with his father, four brothers and three sisters, started for Iowa, by way of Alexandria, Missouri, where the father passed away in 1853. Mr. Wells came to Clarke county shortly after his father’s death, and with the exception of a few years spent in Nebraska he was a continuous citizen of Clarke county.

In 1861 he enlisted in Company C, 33 Reg. Iowa Infantry. He was promoted to first orderly sergeant, then to first lieutenant and in 1864 to captain of his company. He was mustered out July 17, 1865, at New Orleans. In the same year he was married to Harriet S. Chick of Oskaloosa.

He took part in the battles of Jenkins’ Ferry, Helena, Arkansas, and a number of smaller engagements. At Jenkins’ Ferry he received a gun shot through the thigh, a serious wound from which he never entirely recovered. In the death of J.B. Wells, Clarke county loses one of its best citizens.

He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Nellie Currier and Mrs. Grace Dalby, two sisters, Mrs. Lizzie Streight and Mrs. Mattie Sage, four grandchildren, two great grandchildren, besides a number of other relatives and a host of friends.

Funeral services were conducted from the Methodist Episcopal church yesterday afternoon at 2 o’clock by the Rev. James F. McKay, assisted by officers of the local post of G.A.R and members of I.O.O.F. A large number of members from these orders were present in a body. The church was filled with neighbors who were present to pay their last respect to one they knew and love so well. Interment was made in Maple Hill cemetery.
