Mrs. S. A. Diehl.

Sarah Ann Carnahan was born in Darke county, Ohio March 10, 1840, and died at her home in Osceola, Iowa, May 16, 1921, aged 81 years, 2 months, and 6 days. On March 10, 1859, she was united in marriage to John Diehl of Darke county, Ohio. She with her young husband came to Iowa by wagon in 1860 and settled in Clarke county where she continued to make her home until her death, except that she spent her winters in late years with her children. July 1, 1861, her husband enlisted in the Union army and for four years she was a war widow, enduring all the hardships that attend such a life. About twenty six years ago they retired from active farm life and moved to Osceola where her husband died September 16, 1909. Her father, John Carnahan, was a pioneer preacher of the Church of Christ in the state of Ohio. Mrs. Diehl became a member of the Christian church at the age of eleven years. They first became members of the church in Iowa at Union Chapel and united with the local congregation when moving to Osceola. She was the mother of seven children, three of whom Fannie, Maggie and Pearl--died when quite young. John Richard died at the age of thirty-two, whose widow and son reside in the city. The following are living; Charles B. Diehl of Stratton, Nebraska, Mrs. Minnie Andrus, Santa Ana, California, Mrs. Dolli Richardson, Maxwell, Iowa. Besides the three children living she leaves one sister, Mrs. Josiah Mongar of this city, and seven grandchildren.

The W. R. C. of which she was a member, attended the funeral service in a body. She was also active in the W. C. T. U. She was a very devout member of the Christain church, not only faithful in attendance and generous in the financial support of the local church work, but she was in thorough sympathy with the benevolent, educational, and missionary work of the church. She was a liberal subscriber to the endowment fund of Oskaloosa College, was a life member of the Iowa Christian Missionary Society and Christian Board of Missions. She was a woman who kept open house to the friendless and was noted for her neighborly kindness and ministering to the sick and needy.

Funeral services were held at the Christian church Friday afternoon at 2:30 conducted by Rev. B. S. Denney of Des Moines. Interment in Maple Hill cemetery.
